The Episcopal/Anglican Ministry at the University of Maryland

The History of EACM:

As early as 1894, students from the Maryland Agricultural College self-organized and attended church services sponsored by the new faith community at St. Andrew’s Church, College Park.  They became lay readers, ushers and choir members, and part of the congregation struggling to establish itself.  During the first World War, the Episcopal Church became more aware of the need to serve young people, particularly students.  Bishop Harding had a deep interest in supporting the ministry here in College Park, and so he took charge of the parish as a diocesan responsibility.  The Reverend Dr. Ronald Woods Taylor was brought to St. Andrew’s to be the vicar and to work with college students.  Dr. Taylor was appointed as the first chaplain on campus by the University President, and was given a desk at the college so he might be in closer contact with students.  When Dr. Taylor retired in 1937, he was succeeded by the Reverend Nathanial Acton, who acted as vicar and chaplain.  Later, when a parish house was built in 1954, one of the rooms was reserved for the use of the students.   During the intervening years, St. Andrew’s provided additional housing on Princeton Avenue, for the use of Canterbury Club members and for a chaplain’s intern.  Student dinners were often hosted in these spaces.  When the Veterans Memorial Chapel was built on campus after World War II, the two bodies of Episcopalians entered a new partnership.  A full time chaplain, supported by the diocese, was appointed to the university, and St. Andrew’s achieved full parish status.  The latest example of collaboration in ministry is the opening, in the fall of 2006, of the Episcopal Student Center in the former rectory of St. Andrew’s.  This was the result of many years of dreaming, hard work and planning, as well as a considerable capital campaign by St. Andrew’s Parish and the supporters of the Episcopal/Anglican Campus Ministry at the University of Maryland.
